Sonia Stanyard is a London-based artist with a BA Hon’s in Fine Art from Southampton and was a 2021 Turps Banana Correspondence Course graduate. Her current work explores how far she can stretch and push her ideas through the self-imposed limitation of one material, in this case, handprinted green paper.
Stanyard has exhibited internationally, with a solo show, Nurtured Landscapes, at Lab 610 De Faveri Contemporary Art Gallery in Italy, and group shows which include London Art Fair, Basel Art Fair, H_A_R_D_P_A_P_E_R, Phoenix Gallery, Brighton.,Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair, Art Verona, and The Royal Society of Watercolour Artists. She won the Door Prize for Painting at Centre Space Gallery, Bristol, and the Leguna Art Prize Special Award in Venice, Italy. She has participated in residencies at the prestigious Vermont Studio Centre (USA) and was a recipient of a National Lottery Award for travel and research, and also attended a Clay Residency at West Dean College in 2024.
Stanyard's upcoming exhibitions include group shows with Sluice and LungA School, Iceland. Rabetts Gallery, London. Gallery at Home, South Wales and the Artist Open Studio part of the Camberwell Arts Festival.
“All my works begin by hand printing a dark luscious green onto a variety of paper stocks. The starting point is always the same but the outcomes are constantly evolving, each piece is unique and will never be produced in the same way again.”
