Joseph Goody
Joseph Goody’s imagery is inspired by – in his words – ‘literature, castle walls, parapets and ideas of organisation’. Meticulously composed, his large-scale paintings and works on paper explore geometric forms and layering with a softness that creates a sense of tension.
Joseph’s watercolours, collages, and limited edition woodcuts continue to explore the distinctive colour palette and dialogue between abstraction and architectural figuration that characterise his painting practice. Different mediums serve different purposes for the artist. Whereas his vibrant woodcuts have a solid, graphic quality, ‘watercolour offers a transparency in painting which can create subtleties of colour that I try to replicate in other aspects of my work’. Recent paintings on paper, inspired by the poetry of William Carols Williams, have seen Joseph explore new territory where linear mark-making becomes more important, creating woven pathways from which distinct shapes emerge. For Joseph, these pictures ‘feel drastically different; the idea has always been there but I’ve never fully invested in it’.
Joseph graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 2011 and won the Neville Burston Award for Painting. He continuted his studies at the Royal Drawing School where he won The Patrons Club Prize in 2012. The Cob Gallery, who represent Joseph, have exhibited his paintings regularly. Sid Motion Gallery, London, presented a solo exhibition of paintings in 2020. Oliver Projects has shown Joseph’s works in several group exhibitions including the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair (2021) and, most recently, ‘Escape Routes’ (2022). He lives and works in south east London.
