Xianjun Liu is a photographer based in London. Born in China, Liu's experiences of moving between different cities and countries, combined with the complexities of his gay identity, have given him a unique perspective on the world. His journey, marked by living as an exiled gay man, led him to leave China for the UK in search of a more comfortable life. However, this transition also brought challenges related to identity and the pressures of being an expat and immigrant. These experiences of instability and insecurity have significantly influenced his artistic expression, especially during the pandemic. While studying at The Glasgow School of Art, Liu began exploring the theme of time through various projects. The uncertainty of the pandemic period, when the future seemed unclear, inspired him to delve into how everything remains and changes over time. Living alone as an expatriate, he often found solace in nature and space, capturing the beauty of the present moment—whether it was the vibrant hues of a tree, the dance of falling leaves, or the tranquility of a snowy landscape. These snapshots, reflecting the passage of time, led to his first project, "The Form of Memories." Liu's second project, "Time," was inspired by a visit to his hometown after 15 years. Documenting his childhood home, which had remained unchanged, he captured the powerful effects of time. This experience further fueled his exploration of how memories and the passage of time are intertwined, shaping his artistic narrative.
