Spectral Nation is a collaboration between Luke Frost, Jon Rundall, and Therese Vandling. Their work is a process-led exploration of screen printing and abstract composition. Emerging from the interplay of natural forces and the actions of the artists, their unique compositions are an exercise in colour interaction and the manipulation of irregularities within the print process. Compositions evolve across each series of work, with shifting details playing out on a larger scale. With layers applied in a painterly manner, their aleatoric approach builds up visually distorted textures, echoing psychedelic states of consciousness, and showing parallels with layered audio recordings. Their recent series of works ‘Erase Phase’ use an amalgam of masking techniques, monoprinting, hand pulled raw gestural first passes vs smoother blended gradients, creating visual tension and discordant colour combinations in increasingly complex scenes that are ambiguous and open to suggestion by the viewer. The Ambient Haze works are meditations on colour. Using a diffusion dither stencil technique to build up layers of gradients, expansive colour interactions arise. The half way line providing a reference point alluding to a horizon. Between them they have studied at Royal College of Art, London College of Printing, and Croydon Art College They have exhibited since 2009 with solo and group shows in the UK & Internationally (Neu Gallery, London 2009, Autobahn, Istanbul 2011, Galleri Storck, Oslo 2013, Beach, London 2014) This is Spectral Nation’s first appearance at the WCPF Their work is held at Galleri Storck, Oslo and Lancaster Museum of Art & History, Los Angeles, Soho House, Brown's.

  • Our pioneering exhibition model of 50% specialist galleries and 50% independent artists is unique in supporting artists who may not have the opportunity to show in an international art fair which generally rely on gallery representation.

WCPF's global art platform hosts an open call that gives artists the cchance to have their work reviewed by a panel of leading industry experts, with successful artworks going on to show in the Fair's 'Curated Hang' section alongside celebrated names and work from renowned galleries.

This exposure provides further opportunities for artist awards, prizes and residencies, to significant acquisitions and gallery representation.

  • Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair only deals in original prints and does not work with reproduction prints which are copies of other artworks, and where the term 'print' can be misunderstood.

An ‘Original Print’ is a work of art that was conceived as a print in its first instance, as opposed to a reproduction of another original work.

This means the artist has set about to create a print, whether it is an etching, mono-print, lithograph etc. rather than simply taking a photograph or scan of an existing artwork and printing out a number of ‘reproduction’ prints like a poster. The artist decides on the number of editions within the print run and number each accordingly (eg. 1/30). There is no difference in value between the first and the last print within the edition as each one is an original artwork.

Once all editions have been printed the matrix is destroyed or repurposed so no others can be made.

For more information about prints and how to look after them, please visit our About Print page.
