The images Luca Ortis makes are about Natures mysterious and powerful attributes. Over the last 25 years much of his work has been dedicated to the practice of Horimono, traditional Japanese tattooing. Luca has spent a large part of his life steeped in Japanese folklore and visual culture. This has naturally found its way into how he approaches image making, and in the subject matter he's drawn to. Luca sees photography as a modern manifestation of animistic practices. Just as animism recognises the essence and spirit of objects and beings, photographers strive to capture moments and scenes that convey the soul and character of their subjects. Both animism and photography involve recognising the intrinsic value and uniqueness of the world around us, whether it's through spiritual connection or visual representation. The photographs he takes are proof of the connection between himself and nature. Pressing the shutter is the recognition of the special value and life contained in that natural subject, which some, but not all possess. The way he intervenes in the images and prints them is an attempt to celebrate and heighten this special nature. The hand crafted nature of the printing process, the use of handmade paper and botanical toners are all part of the ritual. The finished piece is a totem of the relationship between himself and the natural world.
