Lena Ochkalova’s works explore the theme of abstract visual aphorisms via common concepts: abundance of information and knowledge, sense of time and place, social or mentality collisions. In her printmaking practice Lena concentrates on two directions: monotypes and drypoint prints. In both of those techniques she is aiming to create unique single edition works. In her approach Lena tries to mimic the quality of a free hand drawing and preserve a possibility of unexpected effects to appear in the final imprints. Lena’s recent drypoint prints represented here are investigations of clashes between social norms and expectations with a certain portion of sarcasm. These two works can be viewed as a visual fable or a mise en scene to an imaginative narrative. In contrast, Lena’s large scale monoprints are free from any reflection to societal. Rather they are results of abstract expressive experiments depicting emotions. Lena studied fine arts in private studios at St.Petersburg, Russia. After moving to New Zealand she obtained her second Master degree as an art curator at AUT. Since 2012 Lena had several individual and group exhibitions in New Zealand with the latest solo exhibition “Mechanical Habits” in 2022 emphasizing on the theme of handmade monoprints.
