Jess Townsend’s prints illustrate the serendipity of nature, focusing on a moment of beauty that may otherwise be undiscovered or unseen. As a starting point for her practice she immerses herself in familiar landscapes and looks for the extraordinary amongst the commonplace and familiar. From sketches and pinhole photography through to intaglio and relief-printmaking Jess creates complex images, within each plate she captures and conveys imprinted motifs of collected materials and patterns. Using Japanese Washi, Jess' prints glimmer with a luminous light, the handmade paper glowing subtly beneath her dark compositions. By exaggerating details in her prints she evokes an undercurrent of mystery and explores a magical sense of place. The submitted etching is part of a series exploring liminal spaces and the uncanny, the print's delicate composition draws the viewer into an intriguing pool of light. Jess studied at Goldsmiths College of Art, London and has been a member of Spike Print Studio in Bristol since 2006. She has exhibited widely since 2009 and highlights include: The Exposition Collective at L’Atelier Aux Lilas, Paris, Hepworth Wakefield Print Fair, Royal West of England Academy Open, Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, WCPF, Associates Exhibition Penwith Gallery, Small but Mighty Exhibition Bankside and Project Babel Finland.
