Annie Ward is a printmaker and illustrator based in South London. Her work is rooted in observational drawing, capturing intimate interactions between people and their environment. Ward is interested in ‘in-between’ moments - where subject and environment are knitted together; the energy of day to day life. She primarily works in monotype and pastel, exploring how the imprecise nature of these techniques can inform her image-making process. Ward’s recent collection of gouache monotypes depict gardeners at work in allotments and public gardens in London and Cumbria. The prints begin as observational drawings, capturing the rhythm of the garden as horticultural structures stretch between foliage and figures. The figures weave together with the plants, reflecting the care in their work and the connection with their environment. This series involved experimentation with gouache monotype - the printing process creating a flat, interconnected surface on the paper and between the subjects. The vivid colour palette and marks express the joys and energy found throughout the seasons, emphasising the importance of the relationship between people and the natural world. Ward graduated from MA Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts in 2020 and studied the Drawing Intensive at the Royal Drawing School in 2023. In 2024 she took part in a residency at Kindred House in Margate, where she conducted research for a new series of monotypes inspired by the Kent coast. Her work has been exhibited at Lewisham Arthouse, Art Hub Studios and Hebexing Ceramic Gallery in Beijing.
