Contemplating the in-between

Attached to the ephemeral balances and in-betweens that punctuate our daily lives, Fumika Sato questions the conditions of coexistence through the contemplation of the proximate.

“The "in-between" is a space where many elements cohabit, each in its own place, without really being able to assign others to them: a here, a there. Having lived abroad for a long time, other countries have become my home. That doesn't mean that my native Japan has become foreign. This condition puts me in a constant state of flux, in a perpetual quest for equilibrium. With the support of my creation materials, which coexist in their own way, I transfer this search for balance to the landscapes that evoke the same sense of floating.”

Fumika Sato is developing a cross-disciplinary practice embracing different techniques such as engraving, photography and drawing. She finds her inspiration at the frontier of these media, and seeks to bring these different elements together with the landscape she sees on paper. Visual expression and technique interact, each pushing the limits of the other while respecting its presence.
Fumika Sato's work is a constant search for equilibrium between these different elements. This balance found at the boundary between elements - constraints, ink, colours, support, pressure, gestures and landscape - allows the artist to explore the spaces “in between”. These spaces of transition, of floating, of ambiguity, of assumed indefiniteness.
